If Paris is the Heart of France, Lyon is the Soul.
Located at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, nestled between Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley, Lyon is a sophisticated city that warmly welcomes you. With its rich history as one of the most important cities of the Roman Empire, world-class museums, a UNESCO World Heritage site and an exceptional meal on every corner with its classic Bouchons, Lyon will capture your heart and soul. Dirty Radish invites you to experience Lyon as only a local can. Your host, Chevonne is more than a tour guide, she creates a unique experience for adventurous travelers who enjoy exploring and wish to appreciate the French 'art de vivre' in one of the most welcoming, historic, and delicious cities in Europe.
Cru Beaujolais. It’s more than Nouveau!
They say there are three rivers that run through Lyon: la Saône, le Rhône, and le Beaujolais. Made from the humble grape Gamay Noir by the even more humble winemakers of Beaujolais, this wine is accessible to everybody, from the most novice of wine lovers to the in-the-know sommeliers.
Your Guide: Chevonne Ball
After moving to Lyon, France in 2009 Chevonne Ball fell head over heels in love with Beaujolais and it’s been a love affair ever since. Having worked as a manager and wine buyer for over 12 years at some of Portland’s best restaurants she honed her wine skills and became a certified sommelier and French Wine Scholar.
She now takes her passion for Gamay, Beaujolais and all things French to her travel company, Dirty Radish where guests get exclusive access to winemakers, chefs, artisans, and local food and wine lovers on her tours of Beaujolais and Oregon.
“I know one thing that is done very well in Lyon. One eats admirably well there, and in my opinion, better than in Paris. Vegetables especially are divinely prepared. In London, I learned that there are twenty-two species of potatoes, in Lyon, I saw twenty-two different ways to prepare them, and at least twelve of these are unknown in Paris.”
Experience Lyon + Beaujolais
Bookended by explorations of Lyon, a UNESCO world heritage site and the gastronomy capital of France, you'll travel through the Beaujolais region and the villages of Julienas and Oignt. From vineyard snacks to Bouchons to Michelin starred establishments, you'll eat like a local and savor authentic dishes that highlight local ingredients. There will, of course, be plenty of Gamay poured, but you'll also enjoy Chardonnay from southern Burgundy Mâconnais, Syrah from the northern Rhône Valley, and other local favorites.
Situated at the confluence of two major rivers, Lyon has been an idyllic destination for travelers in the know. A modern city that has kept its old-world charm alive with its walk- and bike-friendly streets, gracious locals, and a way of life that satisfies both the spirit and the palette.
“While Baudelaire characterized the flâneur as a “gentleman stroller of city streets,”he saw the flâneur as having a key role in understanding, participating in, and portraying the city. A flâneur thus played a double role in city life and in theory, that is while remaining a detached observer. ”
